Back in the 1700's, this area of Connecticut was known as the Blue Hills. I hadn't really seen the connection until this morning. Hiking on Sleeping Giant, looking south to New Haven through the haze, the hills did have that bluish tinge that would have marked the area.

Christmas is a supposed to be a joyful and happy time, together with family and friends. While you're stressing out at work, running around shopping and planning dinners and parties and breakfasts after the parties, and, and, and .... Stop a second, close your eyes. Picture the crackling fire, the glittering tree, your favorite people all around. Take a breath.
See? Christmas really is your favorite time of year.

I was flipping through old photos (can you really "flip through" a memory stick?) and found shots from earlier in the summer - a fire out back on a cool evening, marshmallows on a stick for dessert. The great thing is you can daydream a little watching the flames dance, and then when you're ready - S'mores!! It doesn't get much better.

It's scenes like this that get me in the mood for the Christmas season.
Winter day dawning near Châtel-Saint-Denis, Switzerland. Driving into work, I came over a hill and around the bend to this view. Street lights starting to twinkle off, roiling snow fog pulling back to uncover the town, the dawn light reflecting off the Church windows. If you had the gear, this is where you would stop, set up and frame the perfect shot. Or if you're like me, you just pull over, stick your Blackberry out the car window and snap the picture.
The day unraveled pretty quickly from there, but for a few minutes... Nice.

While the photo isn't the best I've ever taken, I had to post the story behind it. When my kids were little, they were up and ready to play much earlier than my wife or I would have liked. Weekends, I got up early to feed and play with them. And watch cartoons. Well, the kids have grown and now we have kittens. Kittens who think 5am is breakfast and play time. So here it is, Saturday morning. Up at 5:30, breakfast finished, watching cartoons. And then it clicked, I've done this before. Mighty Mouse - now that takes you back.

Nothing like a quick snow to remind you what's coming (as if the short days and dropping temp wasn't enough). A couple of inches in the early morning, then melted and gone from the streets and yards by afternoon. Out in the woods, it hangs around a little longer.
