Fire

I wasn't in a crowded movie theatre.  I was on a trail just south of Alberta Falls in Rocky Mountain National Park.  The trail turned out onto an overlook and I saw smoke billowing on the horizon.  "That's the High Park fire" they said.  "Not there.  There", pointing a little to the northeast.  And it got quiet.

The big white smoke plume on the left side of the photo is the High Park fire.  The grey smoke in the valley on the lower right of the photo was from a new fire, and it looked too close.

The Estes Park fire started around noon Saturday near an entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, and was 90% contained a few hours later.  27 acres and 22 homes burned.  High Park has been burning for two weeks - 82,000 acres, 248 homes, 1 dead.

I used to think those Smokey the Bear posters were a little hokey.  That big ol' bear with the Forest Service hat on - "Only you can prevent forest fires."
But after weeks of high temperatures, low low humidity and strong winds, there are eight wildfires burning in Colorado.  Even after the current fire ban ends, listen to the bear.

Marmot On Mt Evans

Marmot On Mt Evans by jim.colleran

In a recently declassified photo from the Apollo 17 lunar landing, speculation about life on the moon...

No - that's not it.  Let's try this,

Hollywood is abuzz about leaked stills from the new movie "Gophers in Spaacce"...

13,000 feet on Mount Evans, well above treeline, the ground is rocks and sand with very little growing or moving.  At least until this guy shot across the trail.  A marmot - bigger than a squirrel, smaller than a ground hog - named after an outdoor clothing company (or maybe it's the other way around?)

Summit Lake, Mount Evans Colorado

A couple thousand feet in elevation above yesterday's wildflowers - Summit Lake on Mount Evans. Just thawing out, the ice has melted, and the snow pack is about gone.

But that means the tundra is coming alive with grasses and flowers.

Sidewalk Masterpiece

Sidewalk Masterpiece by jim.colleran
Sidewalk Masterpiece, a photo by jim.colleran on Flickr.

Remember all those masterpieces you created with chalk on the driveway?  Mine were stick figures and squiggles, but hey - one man's art etc, etc.  At the Denver Chalk Art Festival - artists lined Larimer Square for two days to create these works, from whimsy to the classics.  I was still trying to find the one that led to the English Carnival - oops, my Mary Poppins is showing.

My favorite - crazy eyes, with a jumble of colors, bringing art out of that chaos of the chalk plate.

And another favorite - catching this kid eyeing the carefully laid out chalk palette of one artist.  He has to be thinking, "I just want one of the blue pieces, doesn't he have blue??"

This was a day of every color under the sun.  But if blue is your favorite, check out Carmi's Written Inc.  It's blue week!

Thatchtop and Bierstadt

Bierstadt Lake

Rocky Mountain National Park.  Snack break at Bierstadt Lake with Thatchtop in the background.  At least I think it's Thatchtop - comment away if that needs correction.
